British racer Will Palmer will complete MP Motorsport’s GP3 Series line-up for the team’s debut season in the championship. The 21-year-old adds more strength to the outfit’s three-pronged attack on the Formula 1 feeder series as he takes the remaining seat alongside MP’s earlier signings Niko Kari and Dorian Boccolacci.
Palmer joins MP on the back of two positive days of GP3 testing with the Dutch squad at Barcelona, the Briton graduating to GP3 after a strong season in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in which he took three wins and ten podiums on his way to second place in the standings.
“It’s wonderful to be able to make the step up to GP3”, said Palmer, a former winner of the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award, “and I’m very happy to do so with MP Motorsport. The Barcelona test gave me the confidence that together we can get the job done, and having two very strong and experienced teammates in Niko and Dorian will provide me with a good benchmark, as well as help me to quickly get to grips with the car and the category.”
“Will has been outstanding in Formula Renault 2.0 last season”, said Sander Dorsman, team manager at MP Motorsport, “so we are extremely pleased that we have signed him up for his first season in GP3. With Will, Niko and Dorian, our 2018 GP3 line-up now consists of three established frontrunners. We are very much looking forward to starting the season with three of the quickest guys around.”
Palmer started his motorsport career in the Ginetta Junior Championship before switching to single-seaters and winning the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Championship, having won the winter series the previous year. His first season in Formula Renault saw him net one win and two podiums on his way to 7th in the 2016 Eurocup before his runner-up finish last year.
