Jehan Daruvala will race MP Motorsport’s third GP3 car in the series’ swan song in Abu Dhabi. Flying in straight from taking part in the Macau Grand Prix, the 20-year-old Indian driver will make his GP3 debut at the Yas Marina circuit this weekend.
Daruvala joins the Dutch team on the back of a season in FIA European F3 in which he scored one win, one pole position and five podiums. For the final GP3 weekend of the season, he will be team mate to Dutchman Richard Verschoor and Canadian Devlin Defrancesco. The Indian is already familiar with MP Motorsport and the Yas Marina circuit, having taken part in the GP3 end-of-season test with MP in 2017.
“After my 2017 test, it will be good to gain some more GP3 experience ahead of the 2019 season”, said Daruvala, “and I’m happy that MP has given me the opportunity to do so. It’s a busy November month for me, adding Abu Dhabi straight after Macau, but that’s only good!”
“I’m pleased to welcome Jehan to our GP3 team for the final weekend in the series’ nine-year history before we move on to the all-new FIA F3 in 2019”, said MP’s team manager Sander Dorsman. “I’m sure Jehan will gel well with Richard and Devlin, and will help us wave goodbye to GP3 by going out on a high.”
Having finished third in the 2014 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship, Daruvala moved to single-seater racing the next year, finishing fifth in the 2015 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC series and runner-up in the 2016 Toyota Racing Series. He began 2017 winning the New Zealand Grand Prix (Toyota Racing Series). He then debuted in the FIA F3 European Championship in which he took sixth in the championship with a win, a pole and three podiums in total. In his second FIA F3 season in 2018, Daruvala copied those results and added two more podiums and a fastest lap.
