Finally, we had the start of the first Eurocup Formula Renault race weekend in Monza. After strong results with testing during the winter, it was finally time to show that speed under pressure.
The first Eurocup Formula Renault race was on a dry track with 22 cars at the start. Lorenzo Colombo starting at pole didn’t have a perfect start and lost one position while he reached turn 1. Soon after that Lorenzo got hit on his left rear wheel in the chicane and span. He couldn’t recover from it and had to stop with the race. Victor Martins lost some positions while Amaury Cordeel won positions during the start. The safety car went out because of the incident of Lorenzo.
Victor Martins had a good restart of the race, and he eventually got his 5th start position back. He overtook another car for the 4th position the lap after that. Cordeel was in the middle of a big battle but got pushed off the track and dropped back to the 16th position.
Victor got overtaken on the straight by Malvestiti with still 16 minutes to go till the end of the race. He had a bad exit because of the battle at the end of the straight and got directly pressure from Piastri that finally managed to overtake Victor as well. Soon after that Piastry got in contact with Malvestiti and broke his front wing, so Victor got back his 5th position again. In the last 5 minutes Victor managed to overtake back Malvestiti, and he finally crossed the finish line 4th.
The second race was under rainy conditions, and so the race had to start behind the safety car. The race didn’t even start, and we got already the first crash of the race back in the field behind the safety car and as well in Turn 1. The safety car had to go out again so that the marshals could clear the track.
Victor Martins managed to overtake his teammate Lorenzo Colombo at the end of the straight during the restart of the race for 2nd position. Another incident happened during the second restart in the back of the field, and the safety car had to go out again with 9 min to go.
The race restarted with 3 min to go. Victor Martins added straight pressure on Smolyar for P1 but couldn’t overtake him before turn one. Colombo stayed at the 3rd position while Cordeel had to give up some places and dropped back to 9th. Colombo and Martins both finished on the podium and collected the first trophies for MP Motorsport.
