Young Austrian driver Lukas Dunner will join the FIA Formula 3 Championship for his debut season in the Formula 1 feeder series. The 17-year-old from Vienna rejoins MP Motorsport, having originally made his motorsport debut with the Dutch team back in 2017.
Dunner joins MP Motorsport on the back of a one-off outing in the 2019 FIA F3 World Cup in Macau. Now, by signing for the full season ahead, the Austrian completes the Dutch team’s three-car assault on the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship, lining up alongside Dutchman Bent Viscaal, who was announced earlier.
“It feels good to be back home”, said Dunner on rejoining the team with which he raced in Formula 4 in 2017. “I couldn’t think of a better environment for my promotion to FIA F3 level, as I have fond memories of my F4 season with MP three years ago. Together with Bent, I’m sure we will make an impact on the series, and in my debut season I hope to learn from his experience in FIA F3.”
“It’s a joy to welcome Luki back into the team”, said MP’s team manager Sander Dorsman. “He has developed well in the two seasons since, and I’m positive that he will be an asset to our FIA F3 team. With Bent and Lukas, our line-up for 2020 is shaping up really well, and I can’t wait to go racing with these guys.”
Stepping up from a successful career karts, Dunner joined MP Motorsport for a two-pronged attack on the SMP and Spanish F4 series in 2017 before two years in Euroformula Open took him to seventh and third in the 2018 and 2019 final standings respectively, with eight podiums, two pole positions and two fastest laps accumulated over both seasons. His career also includes several LMP2 and LMP3 forays in the ELMS and VdeV Endurance Series. Showing his versatility, Dunner has even done his fair share of rallying in a Skoda Fabia R5, and will continue to do so.
