Our Formula 2 and Formula 3 teams traveled to  Budapest, for the third round of the 2020 calendar. Budapest came with lots of rain and a bit of sunshine, giving us spectacular races and great outcomes. On Saturday Bent Viscaal reached his very first Formula 3 podium. He finished on P4 in the race, but due to a penalty, he got promoted to P3. He drove an absolute masterclass in Sunday’s rain race, starting from P9 and eventually finishing as first. Unfortunately, he received two 5-second penalties and a finish behind the safety car made him drop to P17.

Formula 3

Richard Verschoor ended behind Bent Viscaal in the first race, on P5 and because of the same penalty, he eventually got promoted to P4. Lukas Dunner had a mega start, starting from P20 and just finishing out of the points on P12. In Race 2 Richard drove to a solid P5 and collecting important points for the championship. Lukas, unfortunately, crashed with another car early in the race, and had too many technical difficulties to finish the race. Due to the crash, Lukas received a three-place grid drop for Race 1 in Round 4 at Silverstone.

Quotes

Richard Verschoor: “I’m really happy with the whole weekend. The pace in Race 2 was a bit slower, especially compared to Bent and Smolyar. We still ended up on the 5th position, and during Race 1 on the 4th position, so I’m overall very happy. It’s good points for both me and the team. I am now 5th in the championship but only 5 points away from the second position. I think we can all be really happy and proud of that.”

Bent Viscaal: “Overall the whole weekend was a very good weekend for me. During Race 1 I drove to P4, which eventually turned into P3, after starting from P9. Race 2 was, of course, also a very good race for me. I felt really good, driving in the rain. Obviously, I’d rather keep my P1, but I am very happy and proud of the pace we had. Thanks to the whole team for the past 3 weeks, I am excited for Silverstone.”

Lukas Dunner: “Race 1 went pretty well, from P20 to P12, close to the points. I pushed really hard and gave everything, but didn’t look too much at my tyres, which wasn’t good for the ending. Lesson learned for the next race. Well done to Bent and Richard! On Sunday I struggled with wheelspin, therefore the car went into safe mode, and I lost 8 to 10 positions at the start. I tried to get back to the front but unfortunately I crashed into another car. I’m really sorry for Cameron Das because it was completely my fault. The car had too many technical issues after the crash so we had to retire. Thanks to the team and crew for the past races! We had big improvements and I can’t wait for Silverstone.”

Formula 2

Just like last week, Formula 2 had some rain races again. Sadly, both the MP Motorsport drivers got unlucky in qualifying. Qualifying was already chaotic, but in the last 4 minutes, when both drivers were out to set a new time, someone spun and a red flag immediately ended the session. Therefore Felipe Drugovich had to start from P18 on Saturday, and Nobuharu Matsushita from P21. Felipe had the perfect strategy, which made him finish on P5 in the Feature Race. Sadly, he had issues at the start of the Sprint Race which made him drop positions.

Quotes

Nobuharu Matsushita: “During the Feature Race, we struggled with huge degradation tyres, which made overtaking very hard. The biggest key factor was the strategy we chose. Unfortunately, we didn’t choose the right strategy. In the Sprint Race, we decided to go for a unique strategy. Sadly, we had to deal with huge degradation tyres again, for both sets of tyres. We need to push hard to improve our race pace.”

Felipe Drugovich: “The Feature Race went very well. We didn’t have a mega pace, but we chose the right strategy, which made us go from P18 to P5, and collect good points. I had some issues during the start of the Sprint Race, therefore I lost a lot of positions and almost ended up last. We didn’t have the best pace and the tyres suffered lots of degradation. This didn’t make it easy and we finished P16. I am looking forward to going to Silverstone.”
