FIA Formula 2 Round 1 Bahrain

Formula 2 — March 7, 2023

Formula 2 season opener podium for MP Motorsport!

The first round of the 2023 FIA Formula 2 season started last weekend in Bahrain. Highs and lows came our way this weekend with a podium, some points in the drivers- and constructors championships but also a very unfortunate DNF for Dennis. Let’s review this weekend!

Qualifying

Qualifying started good on Friday, with a P4 for Dennis and P11 for Jehan, we were in good positions to score some points during the races. Jehan just missed out on reverse pole with about a 0.7 seconds difference to P10. But both cars are in a good position to score points regardless.

Sprint Race

The first podium of the season! With a good Qualifying on Friday and both cars in a good position to score points with the reverse grid. Both drivers saved their tyres in the early stages of the Sprint Race, to maximize them towards the end. Dennis showed great pace and was able to climb from P6 to second position and scored his first podium of the season! Jehan scored good points for the team, climbing from 11th place to a P6 in the end.

Feature Race

The lows of the weekend came on Sunday during the Feature Race, where Dennis didn’t finish the race due to technical issues. The team did keep him on track for a while to check if the issue could be fixed before Jeddah, but on lap 24/32 Dennis’ race was officially over. Jehan acquired some penalties during the race and in the heat of Bahrain the degradation of tyres was a big issue. He unfortunately dropped back too, and ultimately finished the race in P16.

Driver standings after round 1:
Dennis P7
Jehan P11

Team standings after round 1:
P6

That’s it for the first round of Formula 2 in 2023! See you in two weeks where we take on the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia!
