FIA Formula 2 Round 3 Melbourne

Formula 2 — April 4, 2023

Hauger’s first win

It’s the first time ever that our Formula 2 team raced in Melbourne, Australia. It was an eventful weekend, with multiple red-flag situations during the sessions. Unfortunately, one of the red flags compromised our qualifying result. When both Dennis and Jehan were on their final fast and improving laps, the session finished earlier due to a crash. Dennis qualified tenth, and Jehan in P12.

Qualifying in tenth, meant Dennis would be starting the Sprint Race from reverse pole position. The Norwegian kept the lead of the race, although he had to strongly defend his position in the opening laps of the race. Jehan was moving his way towards the top 10 in the first 7 laps. Halfway the race, Doohan spun which brought out the safety car. It had also started to rain quite hard, Jehan came in for a pit stop to change to wet tyres, while Dennis stayed out behind the safety car. With 2 laps left, the race restarted and until the end, Dennis kept the lead. This was his first and important win of the season. Jehan finished in P17.

The Feature Race on Sunday, although sunny, was as chaotic as the Sprint Race. Both MP cars showed great pace and Dennis was quickly making up positions. In the seventh lap, the safety car was deployed for a crash between Doohan and Crawford. Jehan and Dennis made their mandatory pit stop. By lap 15, Dennis was driving in P9 and Jehan in P12, with the top 5 still to do their mandatory pit stop.

With only 7 laps to go, the safety car was deployed once more due to separate crashes of Nissany and Fittipaldi. Right before the restart of the race, Dennis was driving in the third position and with only a few laps to go he had a good chance of finishing higher. Unfortunately, in the final corner before the restart he was touched from behind by Martins which made him spin. He had damage and couldn’t finish the race. Jehan scored good points by finishing in the sixth position.

Driver standings after round 2:
P6 Jehan – 32 points
P7 Dennis – 30 points
Team standings after round 2:
P3 – 62 points

Our F2 team has a bit of rest now and will travel to Azerbaijan in the final week of April.
