Goethe Close Out 2025 F2 Season with Double Top-Five in Abu Dhabi

The 2025 FIA Formula 2 season reached its conclusion under the iconic lights of Yas Marina. While the Drivers’ Championship was already settled coming into Abu Dhabi, the battle for P2 in the standings and the fight for P4 in the Teams’ Championship remained wide open.

For MP Motorsport, the mission was simple: finish the season on a high. With Richard still in contention for vice-champion and Ollie carrying strong pace into the finale, the team entered the weekend determined to extract every point possible.

Free Practice

Abu Dhabi opened with considerably warmer conditions than Qatar, despite similar forecasted temperatures. Early laps saw Maini, Minì, and Duerksen trading times at the top as the field built temperature into their tyres.

Ollie placed MP Motorsport on top with a clean lap in the 1:40.3 range before Minì reset the benchmark to a 1:39.866. As the final minutes unfolded, the track ramped up rapidly and Ollie settled into P5, keeping MP inside the sharp end of the field.

Richard pushed through the session but couldn’t find the final few tenths, ending in P13.

Final Results:

  • P5 – Oliver Goethe
  • P13 – Richard Verschoor

Qualifying

As the sun set and Yas Marina lit up, both MP drivers headed into qualifying with clear objectives: Ollie to return to the top four after his Qatar pole, and Richard to put himself in the fight for vice-champion.

The first runs saw limited improvement across the field, but Ollie was noticeably comfortable, consistently edging his teammate by several tenths. On his push laps he clocked a time identical to his deleted lap minutes earlier, ultimately securing P6.

Richard struggled to unlock the rear stability he needed in the final sector and finished P12, a position he would carry into both races.

Final Results:

  • P6 - Oliver Goethe
  • P12 - Richard Verschoor

Sprint Race

Ollie lined up P4 for the reverse-grid Sprint, while Richard started from P12 with clear work ahead.

A competitive opening phase saw Ollie defending strongly from Beganovic, who attempted multiple moves into Turn 9 but couldn’t make them stick until the later stages. For several laps Ollie held a tight DRS train at bay, demonstrating strong racecraft.

Richard, boxed into a long DRS queue, was unable to move forward as the midfield ran nose-to-tail from Turn 5 to Turn 11. He crossed the line P12.

Ollie finished a solid P5, bringing home points that kept MP in the Teams’ fight.

Sprint Race Results:

  • P5 – Oliver Goethe
  • P12 – Richard Verschoor

Feature Race

The final Feature Race of the season offered little opportunity for progress. Ollie and Richard both boxed early, but the timing of their stops placed them in heavy midfield traffic, and neither driver had the tyre advantage required to break through the long DRS trains that defined the race.

From that point forward, it became a management exercise rather than a strategic fight. Ollie maintained solid pace throughout and brought the car home in P5, securing valuable points for the Teams’ Championship. Richard found himself locked behind rivals on similar strategies and finished P12, unable to create an opening in a race where overtaking proved extremely limited.

Although the Feature Race never opened up for either car strategically, both drivers delivered a mistake-free finale and brought home the points available.

Race 2 Results:

  • P5 – Oliver Goethe
  • P12 – Richard Verschoor

Looking Ahead

The chequered flag in Yas Marina marks the end of an intense and competitive 2025 FIA Formula 2 season. Richard signs off his F2 career P3 in the Drivers’ Championship, while Ollie closes the year with a wave of strong performances that underline his progress.

MP Motorsport finishes P5 in the Teams’ Championship, tied on 207 points with DAMS Lucas Oil but behind on countback.

With post-season testing returning to Yas Marina on 10–12 December, focus now shifts to 2026 preparations, and to building an even stronger campaign ahead.

Drivers Championship

  • P3 – Richard Verschoor- 170 points
  • P15 – Oliver Goethe - 37 points

Teams Championship:

• P5 – MP Motorsport - 207 points
