Collecting important championship points

Formula 2

Felipe and the team scored good points in the seventh round of the Formula 2 championship. In the first race on Saturday, due to a rain shower on a very wet track, Felipe finished fifth. Clément started from the seventh position, and with some nice overtaking actions finished 13th.

Sunday’s race had different conditions, being dry and sunny. With a late overtaking move in the final corners of the Silverstone circuit, Felipe gained the fourth position. Clément was doing well, he had a mega opening lap gaining 6 positions, and was on his way to scoring points. Unfortunately, at the end of the race, he finished 13th.

Current driver standings:
P1 Felipe Drugovich – 148 points
P15 Clément Novalak – 22 points
Current team standings:

Formula 3

Unfortunately, Alex Smolyar could not drive this weekend because of problems with the English visa system. Filip Ugran took over his position. Filip hadn’t driven a Formula 3 car for more than half a year, but nevertheless put in a good race on Sunday where he finished 19th. On Saturday, he finished 23rd.

Both races were dry races for Formula 3, compared to Saturday for Formula 2. Caio was on his way to a podium place, but was overtaken on the last lap and finished fourth. Sunday’s race was smoother than Saturday’s race, where he finished outside the points in 11th place. Kush had a good race on Saturday where he finished fourth, but a disappointing Sunday race where he finished 20th behind Filip. After post-race penalties due to track limits, he fell back to P22.

Both the Formula 2 and Formula 3 teams will race next weekend in Spielberg, Austria, where they will once again join the Formula 1 championship.

P9 Alex Smolyar – 28 points

Important podium in Baku

Felipe and the team have taken their sixth podium of the season, by finishing third in the Feature Race. Teammate Clément had a tougher weekend after having technical issues. It started during the practice session when Clément hit the wall and couldn’t continue. With zero experience on the Baku track, he qualified on P20. Felipe qualified fifth.

During the race on Saturday, important points were already gained by Felipe, who finished fifth. On Sunday, in the chaos of the Baku street circuit, he added his sixth podium of the season. Felipe’s goal was mainly to stay out of trouble and finish with points again. This meant he sometimes had to back off and lose a position, but being patient, he would be able to get those positions back in the end.

With both results during the weekend in Azerbaijan, Felipe has continued his consistency. He has scored points in all races except one in Monaco, where he had to retire early due to a puncture. This consistency puts both him and the team at the top of the championship standings.

The Formula 2 team now has a week of rest, after which the championship moves to Silverstone, England.

P15 Clément Novalak – 22 points

Felipe takes the magic Monaco win

Felipe has taken his fourth win of the season in Monaco. The weekend started differently from usual, as the grid was split into two qualifying groups. Felipe had the fastest lap when all drivers of group A went for their final fast lap. Felipe was improving but lost it in the final corner and couldn’t finish his lap. Due to some drivers not slowing down under yellow flags in the final sector, Felipe got promoted to pole for the Feature Race. Clément qualified 8th in group B, meaning he would start from P14 on Saturday’s grid.

Saturday was a day to forget for us. During the opening lap, Felipe got touched which resulted in a puncture. He had to come in for a pit stop and later in the race when the team was sure he wouldn’t receive post-race penalties for speeding in the pitlane, he retired the car. Clément was having a solid race, but got hit by Iwasa and couldn’t continue. The Feature Race on Sunday didn’t finish much better for Clément. This time he was hit by Lawson when he tried to overtake Clément at the Grand Hotel Hairpin. Felipe had to defend from Theo Pourchaire the entire race, in the end, there was no rubber left on his tyres. He managed to keep Pourchaire behind him and saw the finish line first.

Three times podium!

Formula 2

We had a great weekend in Barcelona, where Felipe Drugovich won two races!

For the first time in the current F2 era, a driver won two races in one weekend. Felipe took the lead right from the start in yesterday’s race, where he started from P4 after receiving a 3-grid penalty for impeding during qualifying. Clément had a solid race, but he lost a few positions due to having a wide moment in the final lap.

The Feature Race was a mega race for both Felipe and Clément. Felipe came from P10 and started on soft tyres. He took everything out of the tyres and pitted at lap 18. Clément started on hard tyres and switched to soft tyres after 24 laps. Within a few laps on fresh hard tyres, Felipe caught Doohan and took the lead of the race. Meanwhile, Clément was driving through the grid to the fifth position. A result with double points for the team, and two wins for Felipe. Felipe is now leading the championship with a 26 point gap. The team is still leading the Team’s Championship!

Current driver standings:
P1 Felipe Drugovich – 86 points
P14 Clément Novalak – 22 points
Current team standings:
P1 MP Motorsport – 108 points

The following Formula 2 race is in the upcoming weekend when they join Formula 1 in Monaco.

Formula 3

After having a tough round in Imola, our team recovered in Barcelona.

The results started great for Alex on Friday, when he qualified third. Both Alex and Caio were back in the top 10, scoring points in both races. Kush got stuck in traffic during the qualifying session, which led to him starting both races from P22. Immediately in the opening lap of the Sprint Race, Alex had a great fight with Bearman for the sixth position. It was Alex who had more grip and pace so he claimed the position right before the chicane. Both Alex and Caio had more pace than a few cars in front of them, and in the final few laps, Caio overtook Correa for the final podium position. Kush had a solid recovery and finished P17, coming from P22. Alex finished in the points on P6.

The Feature Race was one with multiple safety cars, compared to the Sprint Race. Kush received a 10-second penalty after he collided with Villagomez, whose race finished in the barrier. It was a good race for Alex and Caio, and with a lot of action on track, the top 10 mostly remained the same after the opening laps. Alex finished fourth and Caio seventh.

Current driver standings:
P6 Alex Smolyar – 28 points
P11 Caio Collet – 18 points
P16 Kush Maini – 10 points
Current team standings:
P5 MP Motorsport – 56 points

It will take some weeks before we can see Formula 3 in action again. Their next weekend is Silverstone, which will take place in the first weekend of July.

Championship leaders

Formula 2 and 3 were back for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola. It was the first time for both F2 and F3 to drive in Imola. Friday, the first track day of the weekend, started with a lot of rain. F2’s practice session had to be rescheduled, as the track was too wet for the session to continue. Later in the day, Formula 2 was still able to qualify.

F3 Qualifying results:

P9 Caio Collet
P10 Kush Maini
P15 Alex Smolyar

F2 Qualifying results

P12 Felipe Drugovich
P13 Clément Novalak

F3 Sprint Race 1

Kush and Caio started on the second row in the Sprint Race, on P3 and P4. Kush had a good start and took P2, but later in the race, he would get a drive-through penalty for standing outside of the box during the start. Caio also had a good start and was driving behind Kush on P3. It didn’t take long before Caio also overtook Kush for the second position. Alex gained one position during the start and was driving on P14. In the fourth lap, Caio overtook Colapinto for the lead of the race. Kush had to defend a lot, but by the seventh lap, he was overtaken by Hadjar for P3.

In the 9th lap, the safety car was deployed after two separate incidents in the same and final corner. Caio had a good restart of the race, but Kush was immediately put under pressure by Martins who overtook him. Not quickly after that, we got another safety car. With 3 laps to go, the grid raced again and Caio kept the lead. In the meantime, Alex had driven himself towards P10, coming from P15. In the final lap of the race, Caio was overtaken by Colapinto for the lead of the race. When defending, Caio crashed with Hadjar and couldn’t continue. An absolute heartbreak for both Caio and the team. Alex drove a very decent race and finished 9th, Kush finished 20th due to his penalty.

F2 Sprint Race

Felipe had a mega start and made up 6 positions in the first lap. Clément had an unfortunate start, as Beckmann spun in front of him and he couldn’t avoid him. He had to come in for a new front wing, which brought him to the back of the grid on P20. In the 9th lap, Felipe overtook Boschung for the sixth position. Boschung had a problem and parked his car not much later next to the track.

Felipe was stuck in a battle for P4 in the final laps with 2 other drivers. On lap 24, he overtook Sargeant for the fifth position and made up 7 positions in the race. These points were very important for the championship, as Felipe kept the lead on Saturday.

F3 Feature Race

Right before the race was about to start, some rain fell down and the track was declared wet. Caio and Alex both started on wet tyres, while Kush started the race on slicks. The strategy worked out perfectly for Caio and Alex, who started on P9 and P15. Within a few corners, Caio took the lead in the race and Alex was driving on P3. Both had much more grip than the other drivers in the top 10. Unfortunately, the strategy couldn’t be fully used as the safety car had to be deployed by the second lap. Caio and Alex came into the pits to change to slicks and ended at the back of the grid. Kush was still driving within the points on P9.

The track quickly started to dry up, so bringing Caio and Alex in for slicks was a good decision. Caio and Alex we’re quickly driving on P20 and P22. By the 7th lap, the safety car had to be deployed again. Kush was driving on P6 when the race restarted and had a very decent race overall! Caio and Alex both overtook a lot of cars and finished on P13 and 15. But it’s Kush who got his first points of the season by finishing 6th. After post-race penalties, he was promoted to P5.

Current driver standings:
P12 Alex Smolyar – 11 points
P13 Kush Maini – 10 points
P16 Caio Collet – 4 points

F2 Feature Race

Felipe started on medium tyres and Clément on softs. They both had a good start, but after an incident during the start between Doohan and Hauger, the safety car was deployed. Felipe was driving on P6 and Clément on P12. Both made up positions, and quickly gained another position when Vips crashed. The safety car was deployed again, and Clément came in for a pitstop to switch to mediums. By lap 15, Felipe was driving on P4 and Clément on P14.

Nissany crashed into the wall by the pitlane on lap 21. A virtual safety car was deployed and the pitlane was closed, as it was full of debris. Felipe still hadn’t pitted by the 27th lap and was hoping for another safety car to the end of the race. Clément was now driving on P8 with only 4 more laps to go, going towards his first points! The safety car came in the final laps, but it was deployed as a virtual safety car. In Formula 2 you aren’t allowed to pit under a VSC. When Felipe passed the pitlane, the full safety car was deployed and therefore he couldn’t gain an advantage from it. In the end, he finished 10th, and still scored a point. Clément finished 4th and was finally rewarded with points this season! Due to both cars scoring points, the team is now leading the championship for the first time in F2’s history. A mega job from the team.

Mega weekend for the team

Round two for Formula 2 and what a weekend it was for the team. It started with the practice session, which Felipe topped and Clément finished on P8. Like in the practice session, the qualifying session also saw red flags. Half the grid had set a fast lap, but both Felipe and Clément’s times were good for P13 and P15. After a third red flag, only 5 minutes were left. Only a few drivers went out, including Felipe and Clément. Both advantaged from the quiet track where they found gaps and set good laps. Felipe’s pole lap was 6-tenths quicker than Armstrong’s, who was at that moment sitting on pole position.

F2 Qualifying results

P1 Felipe Drugovich
P12 Clément Novalak

Sprint Race

Due to a grid penalty Clément received for impeding during qualifying, he had to start from P15 instead of P12. Felipe had a good start, starting from the 10th position, and remained his position in the opening lap. By the second lap, he gained a position for P9, Clément also gained a position and was driving on P14. Right after that, Cordeel crashed and the safety car had to come out. By the 6th lap, the safety car went back in but not for long. During the restart Doohan and Sargeant crashed, which brought out the safety car again. Fortunately, both drivers walked away from the incident.

With 6 laps to go, Felipe was driving on P7 and Clément on P14. A fight between Vips, Armstrong and Iwasa for P4 was happening right in front of Felipe. He could take advantage of it, and with 3 laps to go, he overtook for P5. Clément was fighting with Fittipaldi for P12. In the final lap, Felipe takes P4, who had a mega set up all weekend and a great pace.

After a post-race penalty for Hughes, who finished 3rd, Felipe was promoted to the podium and took his first podium of the season. Clément finished in the 13th position.

F2 Feature Race

Because of a penalty for Doohan, Clément started from P11 instead of P12. Felipe started from pole and had a good start where he kept the lead. The drivers were on different strategies. Clément started on medium tyres and Felipe on softs. The opening laps of the race were clean with no incidents. Felipe immediately started to create a gap of 6-tenths. By the 5th lap, Verschoor tried to take the lead but Felipe kept the position. Clément was driving on P13 and fighting with Hughes for P12.

During the 9th lap of the race, Felipe comes in for a pit stop. He switches from the soft to the medium tyres. One lap later, Verschoor came in for a pit stop but Felipe kept the lead. Clément was now driving on P3, with the complete top 7 yet to pit. With 10 laps to go, both on old tyres, Clément and Doohan were fighting for the second position. Not much later Clément came in to switch to the soft tyres. Felipe dominated the race and in the final lap, he had a gap of 2.5 seconds, when he crossed the line for the chequered flag! Clément finished the race on P14 but showed some great battles during the weekend.

The first race of the calendar!

That’s it! We have kicked off the new 2022 calendar with the first round, in Bahrain. Both Formula 2 and Formula 3 are driving together on the same tracks again, supporting Formula 1. The qualifying session for F3 was a busy one. Alex was setting a very fast lap but unfortunately, he was hindered in the final sector and couldn’t finish it. Kush set a lap together which was good for P3, but as he missed the weighbridge moment during the session, he had to start both races from the pitlane.

F3 Qualifying results:

P8 Alex Smolyar
P13 Caio Collet
PL Kush Maini

The F2 weekend started great with a P1 and P4 for Felipe and Clément in the practice session, with only a 1 second between the top 13. Felipe set the tenth fastest time in the qualifying session, meaning he would start from pole position in the Sprint Race.

F2 Qualifying results

P10 Felipe Drugovich
P18 Clément Novalak

F3 Sprint Race 1

Alex started the Sprint Race from P5, due to the penalty Kush received, Caio started from P12. Alex had a good start and was quickly attacking for P4, but Maloney took that opportunity to overtake Alex for P5. Caio gained two positions in the first three opening laps. By lap 6, Kush was already driving on P18. He had gained 12 positions in the first 6 laps.

Caio was in a fight with Leclerc and Vidales for P9. In lap 9, Caio overtook Vidales for P8. With only 5 laps left, Alex was driving on P5 and Kush made it to P15. Alex overtook O’Sullivan for P4 and in the final 2 laps, Alex managed to overtake Maloney and gained himself a podium place. Caio finished on P7 and Kush on P15. Good points for the team, and a promising start for Kush!

F2 Sprint Race

Felipe started from pole but had a difficult start, and fell back to P6. Clément had a good start, where he gained 4 positions and found himself back on P14. In lap 4, Armstrong was spun around which brought out the safety car. Felipe took back P5 during the restart when the safety car went in again. He immediately fought with Lawson for P4, but went wide and had to lift.

With 10 laps to go, Clément was driving on P12, gaining 6 positions. Clément and Hughes collided in lap 16, Hughes had to retire and Clément needed to visit the pitlane for a new front wing. This brought him back to the back of the grid, and he received a 10-second penalty for the collision. Felipe finished the race on P5, and Clément on P19.

F3 Feature Race

The Feature Race seemed to start well for both Alex and Caio. However, in the opening lap, Maloney went slow. Ciao had to leave the track to avoid hitting him. When he re-entered the track, he hit a kerb and his car jumped in the air. Unfortunately, his suspension broke and after only one lap his race was finished.

The safety car had to come out which was good for Kush. During the restart, Alex drove to P3. By lap 9, Kush made it to P21. Alex was fighting with Correa, but due to a small collision with Stanek, he had damaged his floor. Alex dropped back to P6. Alex and Hadjar were battling wheel to wheel when Alex touched the rear tyre of Hadjar. Hadjar was left with a puncture, and Alex received a 10-second penalty. Kush was driving on P21 and fighting with 4 cars. In the end, he finished on P17. Alex finished as 8th, but due to the penalty, he dropped down to P23.

F2 Feature Race

Both Clément and Felipe started the Feature Race on the hard tyres. Felipe lost a few places during the start, finding himself on P15, right in front of Clément who drove on P16. It didn’t take long before the team brought Felipe in to switch to soft tyres, as those were working better on track. Felipe was one of the first in lap 10 who came in for a pit stop, it brought him back on track on P19. Clément was now driving on P13. In lap 14, Clément tumbled down the order due to an engine failure and had to retire.

The strategy was working out for Felipe, as by lap 15 he was driving on P8, as he also set the fastest lap. By lap 17, Felipe was driving on P2 but was overtaken by Pourchaire who had fresher tyres. By lap 25, Felipe was mostly taking care of his tyres and lasting them as long as possible. He was driving on P4 when the safety car came out on lap 27. While the cars were following the safety car, there were two separate incidents in the pitlane, which resulted in a closed pitlane for all drivers. There were two laps left when the safety car went in, Felipe lost two positions and finished on P6. Coming from P10 and having 20 laps old soft tyres, the points were well deserved.

Formula 2 is back next weekend, in Jeddah. Formula 3’s next round is in Imola on 22-24 April, when it joins F2 again.

The final race weekend of the season for MP Motorsport

The final round of the season was held in Abu Dhabi again, after last year’s finale was in Bahrain due to COVID. The weekend started with a promising practice session, with Jack setting the second-fastest time and Clément the 5th fastest time. Qualifying was as successful for Jack as the practice session, where he set a mega lap which got him to P2, meaning he could start from the front row on Sunday’s Feature Race. Clément had a tougher qualifying session and couldn’t set down a full lap, he qualified on P20.

Qualifying results:

P2 Jack Doohan
P20 Clément Novalak

Sprint Race 1

A good start for Jack and Clément, but Jack went wide in the opening lap and lost 2 positions. Clément remained on the same position during the opening lap. Jack stayed close to Armstrong who was driving in front of him on P10. By the 17th lap, Clément was driving on P17, gaining 3 positions. Not much has changed for the midfield during the race, Jack finished on P11, just missing out one reversed pole position, and Clément on P17.

Sprint Race 2

In the second Sprint Race, a lot more happened compared to the first race. The opening laps were chaotic with many attacks on the grid. At some point, Jack was driving with 3 other drivers next to him going into turn 6. It gained Jack one position, driving on P10. Clément lost two positions in the chaotic opening and found himself on P19. In lap 4, the safety car had to come out when Deledda and Caldwell crashed, and Deledda couldn’t continue. After 3 laps the safety car went back in, and Jack overtook Pourchaire for P9. After Nissany, Vips, and Piastri made contact, we had another safety car. During the restart, race leader Armstrong had technical issues and couldn’t continue. This brought Jack to P8 and Clément to P17.

Jack was fighting with Lawson and Nissany for P7, but he ended on the dirty side of the track, therefore both Lawson and Nissany were able to overtake Jack. Nissany and Lundgaard made contact, and Nissany had to pit. Bringing Jack back to P8, Clément was now driving on P14 when he overtook Caldwell. Both Clément and Jack gained 3 positions during the race, finishing on P14 and P8, which meant Jack finished in the points again!

Feature Race

Jack started from P2 for the Feature Race, both he and Clément started on medium tyres, while most other cars in the top 10 started on soft tyres. Jack defended his second position against Zhou, which wasn’t the easiest to do with the cold tyres but he held on and stayed ahead. Jack went wide during the opening lap, while still defending Zhou, and lost his car. Fortunately, he was doing well, after hitting the wall at a high-speed moment on the track.

Clément had a very good few opening laps and was quickly driving on P13 by lap 5 when we went back racing after Jack’s incident. By lap 10, most cars who were driving on soft tyres came in for their pitstop, this got Clément to P6. With 9 more laps to go, Clément came in for a pit stop and changed to the soft tyres. He rejoined the track on P18. Within 2 laps, he overtook 2 cars and was driving on P16. In the final laps he overtook 2 more cars and finished on P14!

The first F2 race weekend for Clément and Jack!

Clément Novalak and Jack Doohan have completed their first Formula 2 race weekend in their career. Formula 2 was back since their last race weekend in September, when we went to Sochi, and now joined Formula 1 on a brand new track in Jeddah. It was an eventful weekend with ups and downs, for both of our drivers. Clément qualified on P12 for Sunday’s Feature Race, but due to a 3-grid place penalty he received in the second Sprint Race, he had to start from P15.

Qualifying results:

P12 Clément Novalak
P16 Jack Doohan

Sprint Race 1

Both Jack and Clément had a clean and good start, but due to a crash between Samaia and Sato in the opening lap, the safety car had to come out immediately. In lap 6, Jack was driving in P13 and Clément right behind him in P14. Jack stayed close to Viscaal who was driving in front of him. Clément fell back a few positions to P16. Jack was driving behind a fight for P7, with 6 cars involved, and was able to overtake Boschung for P12. A few laps later, Clément also overtook Boschung for the 14th position on the grid. Jack just missed out on reverse pole for the second race, but still had a good first race in Formula 2. Clément lost a few positions but was able to fight back and finished on P14.

Sprint Race 2

Sprint Race 2 started a bit more chaotic. Unfortunately, Clément lost the rear end going into turn one and collided with Armstrong, ending their races early and bringing out the safety car. Jack made up 2 places and was driving on P9. With 15 laps to go, the safety car went back in. Not long after that, another safety car had to come out as Vips lost his front wing and couldn’t continue. In lap 10, Jack found himself on P7 after overtaking Drugovich. With 6 more laps to go, Jack was fighting with Ticktum for P6 and got it! Both Daruvala and Lundgaard, driving in front of Jack, received a 5-second penalty during the race. Ticktum braked very late and was able to get P6 back from Jack. With 2 laps to go, Lawson spun and hit the wall, meaning it was the end of the race. Due to the penalties from Daruvala and Lundgaard, Jack finished on P5 and collected some good points in only his second race in F2.

Feature Race

The Feature Race went different than how we normally have it as it was immediately red-flagged when a big shunt between Theo Pourchaire and Enzo Fittipaldi happened on the start-finish straight. After an hour, the race was restarted, but it would be 20 minutes long and half points would be rewarded afterwards. It didn’t take long before the race was red-flagged again after Caldwell and Samaia collided. This meant the end of the race. Jack finished on P13 and Clément on P19 as he had to start from pitlane because he stalled in the first formation lap.

The next and final round of Formula 2 is next weekend, in Abu Dhabi.

A rainy Saturday

Well, this was definitely a different race weekend compared to how we are used to having them. Due to heavy rain, the first race on Saturday morning was canceled. The support paddocks were flooded and racing would have been too dangerous. It started to brighten up later in the day, after Formula 1’s qualifying session, Formula 2 could race their race. This meant there was only time for a total of 2 races this weekend, instead of the usual 3. The timing was perfect, as, on Friday, Formula 2 and Formula 3 announced we’re going back to a 2-race format next season, with Formula 2 and 3 both racing on the same weekends. Friday had a rather usual Formula 2 schedule, with the following qualifying outcome:

P15 Richard Verschoor
P17 Lirim Zendeli

Sprint Race 1

Because of the wet track, we had a rolling start. The only dry part was the racing line on the track. Yet everyone still started on slicks. Within 5 laps, Richard and Lirim both made up a few places. Richard was driving on P12 and Lirim right behind him on P13. Viscaal crashed in the 5th lap, which brought out a virtual safety car. At the restart, Richard gained another position by overtaking Piastri for the 11th position.

With 9 laps to go, Richard was driving on P9 and Lirim on P12. There was a gap of 5 seconds between Richard and Ludgaard. Within a few laps Richard was driving right behind Lundgaard, Lirim overtook Armstrong for P10, and was in the same train as Richard. With Daruvala spinning, Richard drove himself in the points on P8. Lirim finished on P10, which would normally mean reverse pole for the second race, unfortunately, due to the weather conditions that wasn’t the case this race weekend.

Feature Race

The Feature Race didn’t start well for Lirim, who was caught in the chaos in the back and lost his front wing. He had to come in for a pit stop, which made him drop to the end of the grid and a large gap. Richard had a better start and was fighting with Vips for P12. With a lot of pit stops in lap 8, Richard was quickly driving on P7.

In the 11th lap, Richard came in for his pit stop which dropped him to P16. A lap later, Lirim came in for his second pit stop to change the tires, which dropped him to the last place on the timing sheet. The softer tires did Richard well, as he was driving through the midfield. With 10 laps to go, he was driving on P14. In lap 22, Richard made it to the points as he was driving on P9. In the final laps, Boschung fell back on the grid with a puncture, which made Richard finish on P8. Lirim finished on P16.

The next round for Formula 2 will be in December when we move on to Jeddah.

The current driver standings is as followed:

Richard Verschoor – 10th – 55 points

Lirim Zendeli – 17th – 13 points

Team standings:

P6 – 68 points

Unlucky weekend in Monza

After 2 months, Formula 2 is finally back! The last race weekend in Silverstone was a good one for us, where Richard and the team got their first F2 win of the season. We’ve had an unlucky weekend in Monza, where we could have gotten more points than we left with. The qualifying session was as followed:

P11 Lirim Zendeli
P20 Richard Verschoor

Sprint Race 1

As the qualifying top 10 reverses for the grid for Sprint Race 1, Lirim was just missing out on pole and started from his qualifying position. Lirim had a mega start and made 3 positions within the first lap. Richard gained 2 positions and was driving on P18. The safety car had to come out in the second lap when Ticktum spun in the first corner. When the safety car went in, Lirim found himself on P6 and Richard on P15. It was a mega start for both our drivers. By lap 10 of the total 21 laps, Lirim drove on P5 and Richard on P10, which would be the reverse pole for Richard in the second Sprint Race.

Unfortunately, not late after that moment, Richard had to retire as he had technical issues with his car. With 3 more laps to go, Lirim started to slow down and was quickly overtaken by almost every car. He also had technical issues and had to stop his car on the track. We could’ve gotten a lot of points and good results for both drivers in this race, but unfortunately, luck was not on our side.

Sprint Race 2

Due to the retirements in Sprint Race 1, Lirim started Sprint Race 2 from P15 and Richard from P17. Lirim had again a good start and gained 3 places. In lap 8, Richard moved a few places and found himself on P14, while Lirim was fighting with Armstrong for P11. Overall, the second Sprint Race was a solid race for both drivers, with nice overtakes and fights, but unfortunately without points. Lirim finished on P13 and Richard right behind him on P14.

Feature Race

Richard had a good start during the Feature Race, immediately gaining 2 positions, Lirim remained on P11. In the second lap, the safety car had to come out as Samaia spun and was blocking the track. The racing continued when the safety car went back in, and Lirim made a nice move on Shwartzman. A lap later, Shwartzman took back the 8th position. Richard was currently driving on P15 after starting from P20. Vips’ car stopped on track and another safety car came out in the 9th lap. Almost all cars came into the pits, as did both MP drivers with a double pit stop. Unfortunately, they lost quite some time in the pit stop and ended up in the back of the grid.

In lap 21, with 9 more left to go, Lirim and Richard made it to P14 and 15. But Lawson also had issues with his car and had to stop on track, so a new safety car came. The team used this to have another stop for Lirim and switch to the soft tires. Multiple cars came in to pit, and when we started racing again, Richard was driving on P7! Lirim was driving on P13, with 5 laps to go. Within 2 laps, Lirim was already driving in the points on P10. With 2 more laps to go, Viscaal and Beckmann collided and the safety car had to come out again, which would mean the end of the race. Richard was still driving on P7, which was very impressive after coming from P20, and Lirim’s two-stop strategy worked cause he was driving right behind him on P8.

Unfortunately, Richard was disqualified from the race after it was found that the combined weight of his car, including the driver wearing his complete racing apparel, was below the minimum weight.

All in all a weekend with a good car, but lots of bad luck. Next stop Sochi!

The current driver standings is as followed:

Richard Verschoor – 10th – 50 points

Lirim Zendeli – 17th – 13 points
