Tough weekend in Budapest

The race weekend started tough with Dilano still not able to drive due to his injury. However, unfortunately, we also missed Michael Belov this weekend, as he couldn’t join us due to personal obligations. Francesco Braschi replaced Dilano this weekend, and would drive together with Sami.

The first race on Saturday was a good one for Sami. He started from P17 and finished on P12. Outside of the points, but nevertheless, a good result with some great overtakes. Unfortunately, he received a post-race penalty for causing a collision which dropped him back to P17. Francesco had a solid race and finished on P23.

The second race finished quite quickly for Sami, as he collided with Bernier in the opening laps. Francesco was able to drive around some chaos, and like in the first race, he finished on P23.

Current driver standings:
P6 Michael Belov – 93 points
P19 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P30 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points

Home race in Zandvoort

Our home weekend started great, with Dilano back in the car. Unfortunately, that did not last long. After the first Collective Test on Friday, Dilano had to step back from the weekend. Due to an injury, he couldn’t race during the last round, which also affected his results in Monaco and Imola. After having surgery and taking the needed rest, he hoped to be back in the car this weekend. However, the pain was still too severe and he couldn’t continue. We hope to see Dilano back in the car soon.

The first race on Saturday was mostly a quiet race, until the final 5 minutes. The safety car had to come out. At that moment Michael was driving on P10 and Sami on P14. With just 2 more laps to go, the race restarted. It was a good restart for Michael, who finished up in the points on P9. After multiple post-race penalties, he was promoted to the seventh position. Sami also gained some positions and finished 13th.

The second race quickly saw a red flag, after a massive crash between Delli Guanti and Masson. Fortunately, both walked away from the crash okay. After about 20 minutes the race restarted behind the safety car. Michael finished in the points again by coming in as sixth. Sami made up quite some positions by finishing on P16 and starting on P22.

Current driver standings:
P6 Michael Belov – 93 points
P18 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P30 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points

Another podium!

Straight after the Monaco GP, FRECA went to Paul Ricard for a back-to-back race weekend. The weekend started with a very wet Friday. The weather circumstances for both Saturday and Sunday were much better, with not one drop of rain.

Unfortunately, Dilano was not able to join us this weekend. Earlier in the season, Dilano sustained a shoulder injury, which impacted his Imola and Monaco races. This meant we would be driving with only 2 cars in Paul Ricard. Michael had a very good first race, starting on from the seventh position and making his podium move in the final lap. The second race was a bit tougher, with a lot of safety cars, and he finished sixth. Sami had mechanical issues and couldn’t fully show his potential during his home race weekend. However, he still managed to have a good second race where he gained 17 positions.

Current driver standings:
P6 Michael Belov – 79 points
P17 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P30 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points

Points for Michael

Joining Formula 1 and Formula 2, FRECA also went to Monaco for the weekend.

Monaco can only have 28 cars on the grid, but FRECA has 37 drivers. This meant not all drivers could race both races. Michael and Sami qualified 5th and 14th and were able to drive both races. Dilano qualified on P26 and could only start the second race.

The first was a hectic one. With 21 minutes left, the race was red-flagged, after multiple cars piled up in the Grand Hotel Hairpin. With 10 minutes left, the race was restarted. Not much happened after that and Michael finished in the position he started, and Sami finished fifteenth. There was more racing in the second race, but the top 8 mainly stayed the same. Michael collected more points by finishing sixth, Sami was very close to points and finished on P11. Dilano managed to overtake quite some positions and finished on P20, coming from P26.

Current driver standings:
P5 Michael Belov – 56 points
P17 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P28 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points

Starting the season with a podium

The Collective Tests on Friday were two very wet sessions with lots of rain, and that wasn’t the last rain of the weekend. The first qualifying session was a very chaotic one which ended in a red flag. Fortunately, Michael had a much better second qualifying session where he set himself on the second row for Race 2. Sami had a big crash in the first race, and even though he did qualify for the second race, he decided not to race in Race 2 as he had too much pain from the crash. We wish Sami well and hope to see him back in Monaco.

Race 1

Quickly after the start of the race, the safety car had to come out for Sami’s crash, not much later the safety car turned into a red flag and all drivers went back to the pits. With 25 minutes left, they went back for a restart behind the safety car. During the first laps of the race, Michael had already made up 4 positions, and Dilano was driving on P24 when the safety car went back in.

With 12 minutes to go, the safety car had to come out, and with 2 minutes left on the clock, they started racing again. Right before the final lap started, the race was red-flagged again. Michael finished 15th and Dilano 21st.

Race 2

Race 2 was a very chaotic race. Moments before the race started, rain fell down but it was dry during the race start. However, the race was declared wet even though all drivers started on slicks as the track dried up very quickly. Because the race was declared wet, the start was a rolling start behind the safety car. Michael had some very good opening laps and within 10 minutes, he was driving on P3.

With 17 minutes left, it started to rain heavily on the track. This resulted in some crashes and quickly after that, all drivers came back to the pit again as the race was red-flagged. Most drivers switched to wet tyres, as some parts of the track had deep puddles, but other parts where it didn’t rain that much were basically dry. The drivers had about 5 minutes left of racing. Michael had a tough restart and lost two positions, finishing on P6. However, after post-race penalties, he got promoted to fifth. Dilano gained 9 positions and finished on P19!

Current driver standings:
P4 Michael Belov – 38 points
P15 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P28 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points

Starting the season with a podium

Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine has officially kicked off the new season, with the first round in Monza. For the two qualifying sessions, the grid was separated into two groups. Michael was in group A, and Dilano and Sami in group B. Group A were the fastest in both sessions which meant the quickest driver from that group would start on pole. Michael had a very good Q1 where he qualified 3rd, but his last fast lap in Q2 got aborted due to a red flag. Dilano crashed in Q2 and therefore couldn’t set a fast lap.

Race 1

The first race of the season started as a very wet one. It was very busy in the first corners, and Michael lost a position. Sami had a very good start and was driving on P9 in the opening lap. Dilano also made up 4 positions and was driving on P14. Right after the opening lap, the safety car had to be deployed. During the restart Mini, who was driving on P2, had an incident and drove to the pits. No one could overtake him until they reached the start finish, this gave Beganovic quite a big gap. Michael overtook Fluxa for P2 during the restart. Sami lost two positions as he had to go wide and was driving on the tenth position. Unfortunately, Dilano’s race was over as he got pushed off the track by Delli Guanti who rejoined the track from the grass. There was nothing Dilano could do about it.

This incident deployed the safety car again. With 15 minutes left, we had another restart while the rain stopped falling. Michael reacted well on the restart and was right behind Beganovic. Sami took back P9 during the restart. With 8 minutes left the safety car had to be deployed again, which left the drivers only one more lap left to race. Not much changed, as Michael finished second and got his first podium! Sami finished 9th and got his first points of the season.

Race 2

Race 2 was a dry race with everyone starting on slicks. FRECA has something new this season, called push to pass. The drivers get 5 push to passes throughout the race, which gives them a bit more power for 15 seconds. Push to pass is available after the first lap. Michael gained one position during the opening lap and was driving on P8. Sami also gained one position and Dilano lost two positions. After 5 minutes, Michael overtook David for the seventh position. A few minutes later he also overtook Montoya and was now driving in the sixth position. Sami was also on a roll and was driving on P21.

After about 18 minutes, the safety car was deployed. Dilano had overtaken 9 cars and was now driving on P27. During the restart, Michael used the push to pass and overtook Boya for the fifth position. With 10 more minutes left, Sami was driving on P15 and Dilano on P24, both overtaking a lot of cars! In the final minutes, another safety car had to be deployed and with more than a minute left we started racing again. Dilano overtook 2 cars during the restart and was now driving on P21. In the final two laps, Sami went from P15 to P11, he had now gained 13 positions. Michael finished on an impressive P5, Sami on P11 and Dilano gained 14 positions and finished on P19.

Current driver standings:
P2 Michael Belov – 28 points
P11 Sami Meguetounif – 2 points
P22 Dilano van ‘t Hoff – 0 points
Current team standings:

The next FRECA round will be in Imola, from 6 till 8 May.

Publiée le March 17, 2022 par Lois de Bruin

Championship frontrunner Michael Belov has joined MP Motorsport for a fresh attack on the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA). As a proven race winner in the category, Belov has high hopes for a successful 2022 season with the Dutch outfit.

Belov teams up with MP after a strong part season in the category in 2021. Joining the fray as a wildcard entry from round 4 at Paul Ricard and immediately hitting the podium twice, Belov was already a winner two rounds later at Spa-Francorchamps, before taking a second win backed up by another second place at Valencia. Having finished ahead of various established full-season runners in the final standings, Belov now aims for more, as he joins MP in one of the three cars that the Dutch team will line up for the 2022 season.

“I’m very pleased to have signed with MP for the full 2022 FRECA season”, said Belov. “I’ve battled MP’s cars on several occasions last year, and back in SMP F4 the MP drivers were my prime rivals. And now I will be one of them myself! I definitely aim to add more wins to my FRECA victory tally, and who knows where we will stand at the end of the season? I’m looking forward to the start of the season with great anticipation.”

“It’s extremely good news that Michael has joined our FRECA team for 2022”, said MP Motorsport’s team principal Sander Dorsman. “We were very much impressed by his form in the 2021 season, and now having a driver of his calibre on board we are certainly aiming for more wins like the ones he took last year.”

Belov started his single-seater career in the SMP F4 Championship in 2017, taking second place in the 2018 championship with five wins, before embarking on a two-pronged attack on the 2019 Italian and German F4 championships, finishing fourth and eighth respectively. In 2020, Belov started off in the Formula Renault Eurocup before a mid-season interruption took him to six drives as a replacement driver in the FIA F3 Championship. Initially expecting to stay in FIA F3, Belov instead switched to FRECA midway into the 2021 season, taking two wins, five podiums, two poles and four fastest laps on his way to eighth in the final standings.
