Jerónimo Berrío moves to Spanish F4 with MP Motorsport

Colombian teenager Jerónimo Berrío Mardo has signed with MP Motorsport for a switch to the Spanish Formula 4 Championship in 2023. It will be the 16-year-old’s second season in European single-seaters, Berrío having shown great progress in his first year in Formula 4.

Berrío moves to Spain on the back of a successful first season at F4 level, having taken sixth in this year’s French series. The highlight of his campaign was taking the win in a thrilling end-of-season race at Paul Ricard. Previously having claimed a second place at Valencia and two third places at Spa and Magny-Cours, the win in his debut season underlined the fact that the young Colombian has adapted well to his learning curve. Berrío will now embark on a full season in Spanish F4 while leading up to that, he will also compete in selected UAE F4 rounds this winter, again with MP Motorsport.

“I’m really looking forward to joining MP Motorsport for my second season in single-seaters”, said Berrío. “My recent test with MP Motorsport at Barcelona convinced me that competing in Spanish F4 with one of its leading teams is the best preparation for my next step up on the single-seater ladder. I’m eager to kick off my season with the team and will give it all I can!”

“Jerónimo will be a cornerstone in our 2023 Spanish F4 line-up, and I’m happy to welcome him to the team”, said MP’s team principal Sander Dorsman. “He has shown much promise in his first season in single-seaters, and we aim to help him deliver on that promise into 2023. A part season in UAE F4 will be further preparation for what should be a strong campaign in Spanish F4.”

Berrío had a hugely successful career in South American karts before he progressed to Formula 4 in Europe. A champion in the Baby Birel category as early as 2012-2013, Berrío went on to take titles and runner-up positions at Micro and Mini Rotax Max levels between 2014 and 2018. The Colombian then proceeded to also lift the crowns in 2019 Panamerican Junior series, the 2021 Panamerican KZ category and the 2022 South American DD2 championship.

Boya sticks with MP Motorsport for FIA Formula 3 promotion

Spanish racer Mari Boya will step up with Dutch outfit MP Motorsport for his debut season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship. Building on his previous experience with MP in Spanish Formula 4 and the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA), the 18-year-old from Lleida has chosen familiar surroundings for his first year in the Grand Prix-supporting category.

Boya had his first acquaintance with MP’s Formula 3 car in the recent post-season test at Jérez. Taking part in all three days of the test, the Spaniard showed well during his first kilometres in the Dallara-Mécachrome F3-19 chassis, and will now embark on a season in FIA F3 that for the first time will also include rounds at Melbourne and Monaco.

“It’s a great feeling to know that this winter I will be gearing up for a vital next step in my career, moving up to FIA Formula 3 with MP Motorsport”, said Boya. “It’s so good to be able to do that together with MP. Having worked so well with the team in 2020 and in recent months, I had no doubts in signing with them for my FIA F3 debut. I’m really looking forward to racing in front of all the Grand Prix teams, and can’t wait for the first round in Bahrain!”

“We are very pleased to welcome Mari to our FIA Formula 3 team”, said MP’s team principal Sander Dorsman. “Although he will be new to FIA F3, he is very much a known quantity to us. In 2020, his first season in single-seaters with us in Spanish F4 was truly outstanding, and it was good to welcome him back into our FRECA team in the course of this season. He already showed much promise during the post-season tests. Now we are eager to use that as a platform to set him up for the strongest possible rookie year in FIA F3.”

Boya had a strong career in karting that included winning the FIA Karting Academy Trophy in 2018, before moving up into single-seater racing with MP Motorsport in 2020. With three wins, 14 podiums and two pole positions, the Spaniard took second in the Spanish F4 Championship. Boya followed that up with a two-year streak in FRECA, taking tenth in this year’s championship after rejoining MP midway through the season.
